The Invisible Hand of the Algorithm
Social media algorithms were originally designed to personalise content. Posts matched users’ interests, maximising engagement through clicks, likes, and shares. These algorithms have evolved into something far more powerful: shaping opinions, manipulating truth, and reinforcing belief systems. Our offline and online lives intertwine, and we increasingly rely on platforms to engage with society. Social media platforms profit by commodifying our digital relationships, rooted in not only love, but hatred. There is a reliance on human connection, amplifying engagement rooted in antagonism. The algorithm has become a silent architect of perception, with intention to entice, provoke, and divide.
The Mechanics of Outrage
By clustering people into bubbles, algorithms trap people in echo chambers that amplify existing beliefs. Social media feeds our confirmation bias- the tendency to seek out and trust information that aligns with our existing beliefs. Algorithms exploit vulnerabilities, prioritising sensational, emotional, and divisive content which thrives on outrage and extremity. As a result, posts evoking anger, outrage, and fear gain far more visibility than those promoting reflection or nuance. Far-right extremists have exploited this dynamic, tailoring their strategies to the attention-driven logic. This is referred to as the "attention economy". The group polarisation model suggests that people in like-minded environments not only maintain their beliefs, but drift towards extreme positions, in turn normalising extremist ideologies. Extremist worldviews are intensified until the hate feels justified. The result is a profound reshaping of political discourse, where polarisation is not merely a by-product, but a feature of the algorithmic system itself.
The Rise of Digital Extremism across Europe
Across Ireland, the United Kingdom, and wider Europe, extremist material circulates rapidly online, promoting far-right narratives, anti-immigrant sentiment, and so-called nationalist movements. Migrant and minority communities have become targets of co-ordinated campaigns that exploit algorithmic bias and emotional engagement. Conor McGregor’s 2025 presidential bid marked a flashpoint in the politicisation of digital nationalism. His statements and aspirations, widely disseminated across social media platforms, illustrate how algorithmic amplification can amplify populist messaging, shaping public opinion and transforming political discourse. Across Ireland, right-wing activists relentlessly displayed Irish flags, each stitch woven with hatred, turning a symbol of national pride into a marker of exclusion and division. The irony is stark. Ireland, built upon immigration, once subject to signs declaring “no blacks, no dogs, no Irish”, apparently famous for its kindness and hospitality. Yet social media echo chambers now spread exclusionary rhetoric faster than ever, exposing a clash between the country’s historic values and the rise of online nationalism. In the United Kingdom, far-right visibility has surged. The 2025 London rallies underscored the alarming normalisation of extremist ideology. The ensuing riots, fuelled by inflammatory content, exposed the devastating capacity of unregulated systems to destabilise public order. Platforms like X intensify these dynamics. The removal of content filters have saturated timelines with graphic, unsettling, and often violent footage, designed to fuel anger and fear. Across Europe, far-right groups use algorithms to recruit, spread ideology, and coordinate activity. In Spain, the Vox party has gained support among younger voters frustrated by the cost of living and political dysfunction. While anti-immigrant rhetoric remains central, their appeal to the frustrated youth highlights how socio-economic issues intersect with far-right rhetoric. The working class, fragmented by fear, often directs its’ frustration inwards, rather than confronting systemic inequalities. Algorithms intensify misdirected anger, feeding outrage sideways rather than upward. Division blossoms where solidarity should grow. These developments reveal how digital architecture has catalysed a far-right resurgence. Algorithms enable extremist ideologies to spread, adapt, and infiltrate mainstream politics, corroding the cornerstones of democracy.
The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction… no longer exists.
Regulatory Responses
In May, France’s digital development minister called for a Europe-wide ban on social media for children. The EU’s Digital Services Act represents a major step in this direction, regulating digital systems. Platforms must disclose how their algorithms function, and undergo audits to ensure transparency, establishing a framework to curb harmful content. Fully in force since February 2024, the DSA marks a significant advancement in European internet governance. Critics argue that it lacks transparency, with some advocating for “algorithm labels” to reveal key parameters. Others contend that the regulation overreaches, restricting both platform and user freedoms. Still, legal reforms trail behind the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence systems. Platforms require robust auditing systems, legislators must establish accountability rules, and users must recognise how algorithms shape the information they consume. Understanding the logic is the first crucial step.

The rise of far-right ideologies in Europe cannot be understood without acknowledging the role of algorithms. The architecture of the attention economy enables new forms of metapolitical activism, where ideology spreads not through party structures but through viral outrage. The algorithm is not a passive conduit for discourse, but an active agent in shaping it- amplifying extremism, and entrenching divisions. Polarisation, once a by-product of social interaction, has become an engineered feature of the digital landscape, with real-world consequences for our communities.
